‘Canta Mundi’ En Route to Central America

“Canta Mundi” is a group of talented young musicians, ages 15 to 25, who believe that music, and especially choral music, can bridge oceans, people, and cultures. Singing both locally and around the world, the choir is dedicated to reaching across borders to create global awareness and friendship. “Our repertoire consists of an eclectic mix of music from modern era to Renaissance including music from all over the world” says Maestro Brian M. O’Connell, the group’s music director and conductor.

Coordinated with the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture and Youth, the group will travel to Costa Rica this April to give concerts and distribute musical instruments to needy children. Sponsored by the Amaras Art Alliance, the trip to Coast Rica is a wonderful opportunity for these young people to meet and perform with their peers in a foreign country. At the same time, they will have an opportunity to distribute instruments requested by the Costa Rican Ministry of Culture and Youth, which they are collecting now. The instruments will be distributed to children who suffered during an earthquake this past January.

Formed in the fall of 2008, “Canta Mundi” made their debut in December 2008 at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, Mass., taking part in an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the earthquake in Armenia, and appeared on Feb. 28 during the Winchester Madrigal Festival at Winchester Town Hall. Two upcoming performances include the Madrigal Festival in Acton-Boxborough on May 3 and the Lions Club of Lexington at Knights of Columbus Hall on Bedford St. on May 5.

The Amaras Art Alliance, a not-for-profit 501(3)c organization based in Watertown, is sponsoring the group and is appealing to the public for their help in collecting used musical instruments in working condition so that the members of Canta Mundi can carry them to Costa Rica during their April trip. All donations will be gratefully accepted, and acknowledged with a receipt appropriate for tax purposes.
