Adrin Nazarian, on behalf of City Councilman Paul Krekorian, and City Controller Wendy Greuel present Bohjalian with a city proclamation.

“We have seen incredible enthusiasm here in the LA area and in communities across the country in anticipation of the July 17 publication of Bohjalian’s epic on the Armenian Genocide,” said ANCA Western Region Co-Chair Nora Hovsepian, Esq. “Chris’s presentation today, like his book, was engaging and inspiring—guaranteed to serve as a starting point for discussions about the Armenian Genocide and genocide prevention the world over.”

Community members purchased hundreds of copies of the book and stood in line to meet the author and have them signed prior to the official book presentation. Hovsepian welcomed attendees and cited the important role that works like The Sandcastle Girls play in educating mainstream America about the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of genocide denial. Those remarks were echoed by Adrin Nazarian and LA City Controller Wendy Greuel, upon presentation of a proclamation by LA Councilman Paul Krekorian welcoming Bohjalian and the publication of his masterpiece.

Nora Yacoubian, the chair of ANC Grassroots Film and the Arts Committee, was eloquent in her introduction of Bohjalian, highlighting the ANC’s commitment to supporting education about the Armenian Genocide and Armenian American concerns through the arts. “By sponsoring this event as its maiden voyage into a social, cultural, and political environment, it [the Film and Arts Committee] intends to develop and set a very high standard for projects to come.” Yacoubian praised The Sandcastle Girls, describing it as “one of those books you cannot put down. Moveover, it becomes a book that will permanently be etched in the virtual library of your memory.”

Bohjalian who was met with a standing ovation at the end of this remarks, was riveting as he discussed the life journey that inspired him to write this book and gave moving testament of his visits to the lands of his Armenian ancestors, to current-day Armenia, and to Anjar, Lebanon, the home of those who fought to defend the villages of Musa Dagh during the genocide.

Among the elected officials at the special kick-off luncheon were Glendale City Councilman Raffy Manoukian, Glendale City Clerk Ardashes Kassakhian, Glendale Unified School District Board Member Greg Krikorian, LA City Controller Wendy Greuel, and LA City Councilman Paul Krekorian’s chief of staff, Adrin Nazarian. Nazarian and Krikorian are candidates for the California State Assembly in the 46th and 43rd districts respectively.

Special Guests at the book launch included Republic of Armenia Parliamentarian Aghvan Vartanian, His Eminence Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate of the Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church–Western USA, Armenian Weekly Editor Khatchig Mouradian, and Asbarez English Section Editor Ara Khachatourian.

for Chris Bohjalian Novel ‘The Sandcastle Girls’*
(His surname Bohja or Bahja means happiness in many Eastern languages)

We are proud of you Chris
    And we will always be…
Because you’re a real author and a human
Caring for Nation who lost every thing since centuries…!

The cover of the book “the Sandcastle Girls”
Is so…beautiful-soulful peace of painting but melancholic…
When I look at it…I feel my self…
As if…I’m there with my ancestors-beloveds…
    There in Der-Zor desert…in that flat-hot-dry arid land…
    Standing…on a hill…searching for drop of water…
I feel my grandfathers’ skeletons under my feet
Imagining smashed eyeballs still wet with tears…
    And I can view their genocided-bleeding hands…
Still alive without any golden rings…
Girls, brides, mothers lost loved once…their kin…their peers
Pointing to the sun…to the blue April sky…of 1915-1923 and still…
    Calling Saints…Calling Jesus…Calling merciful God…
Singing ‘Sharagans’ (hymns) of St. Komidas/Gomidas (1869-1935)
“Oh my God” (Alah Akbar)…As Arabs Bedouins calls and called God
When they saw the ‘ungodly atrocities’ of Ottomans)…
    But still…No one could hear…and care…!
They continued what they did…with pride…
That they knew how to kill and confiscate…!
As an Arab Poet, Assad Rustom wrote…from Washington, USA
When they hanged his literate friends in Lebanon…in May 6, 1916
“ The sons of Turks you are never Muslims”

Can Chris’s book, which carries the name of Christ, answer us why…
Why they did it all shamelessly…and still they deny…?
May be the recent discovery of Peter Higgs Boson (God Particle) of July 2012
Will give us the answer one day…Why they butchered so artful race
    Those build, their schools…their palaces …their Minarets…
Since the famous Armenian Architect called ‘Mimar’ Joseph Sinan (1489-1588)
    And the family of Balyan
    Those they never carried scimitars…knives…guns…!!!

Every Armenian should have this book at home…
    The Sand castle Girls”
And give the book to his / her friend to read …
It is only another published story
Which will be included in our…I call it…
    “The Bible of Armenian Genocide”
As we suffered for Jesus and more…
Our stories must not get lost…
    Let the world know…

    I encourage everyone to write…as I know
In each Armenian home there is one story at least…if not more
if there are 6 million Armenians
So count how many stories we can publish…
We have good editors in AW they can edit…
    English is an easy Language
And everyone likes to read stories…and novels …!
