WATERTOWN, Mass.—The Armenian Relief Society, Eastern USA, announced on March 27 that it has allocated $10,000 for the 670 Armenian families recently evacuated from Kessab, Syria, and is appealing urgently to its regional chapters and community members to raise additional relief funds.
The ARS expressed its sadness over the recent violence and concern regarding the acute needs of the Armenian families who have been forced to flee their homes in Kessab. “We are extremely distressed by the recent events in Kessab and our hearts and prayers are with the Armenian population there,” said Ani Attar, chairperson of the ARS Eastern Region Executive Board. “We encourage the Armenian community here in the ARS Eastern region to make whatever donations they are able to at this critical time.”
Many of the displaced are staying with relatives, but others are taking shelter in the Armenian church in Latakia. The sudden influx of roughly 2,000 refugees to Latakia and Basit is straining already inadequate supplies of food, medicine, clothing, and other basic items.
