Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamian Named Prime Minister

YEREVAN–President Serge Sarkisian announced on April 13 his decision to appoint the parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamian as Armenia’s new prime minister, reported RFE/RL.

The announcement followed an extraordinary meeting of the governing body of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia the third such encounter held since the unexpected resignation on April 3 of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan.

Under the Armenian constitution, Abrahamian has three weeks to form his cabinet and seek a vote of confidence from the National Assembly controlled by the ruling party.

Speaking to reporters, Republican Party of Armenia spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov said that the party leadership did not discuss the composition of the new government. He said Republican Party will be free to pick ministers from among not only it sporty ranks but also non-partisan professionals.

  1. I have heard Mr. Abrahamian speak in public a couple of times.
He seems to be smart, but my impression is that he is not PM material.
Looks like Pres Sargsyan dispensed some RPA party favours in his last term.
I guess this must be the RoA version of Gee Dubya’s “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job” joke.

Eduard Sharmazanov appears a lot smarter and far more articulate.
Maybe Sharmazanov, who became the Speaker, is being groomed for a bigger role. Who knows.
There are a couple of other ministers in the admin that might have been a better choice. Minister of Agriculture S. Karapetyan seems pretty educated and intelligent, for example.
Even better, the Pres could have gone outside of RPA and chosen a non-partisan pro.

In any case, as the Queen of England might say: “We are not amused”.

  2. I read last month that when some Armenian MPs wanted to condemn the Kessab attacks by making a statement, dear old Hovik Abrahamian refused and claimed the plight of those Armenians are not suitable for Armenia to make comments on, saying: “Armenia is not authorized to intervene in the internal affairs of another country”.

In what way would condemning those responsible for an illegal invasion and violation of international law and looting Armenian properties and belongings, and turning 3000 Armenians homeless and desecrating Armenian churches be “intervening in the internal affairs” of another country? Some “Prime Minister of Armenia” material we have here.

Good luck expecting respect from diaspora Armenians Mr Abrahamian because you don’t have mine. To me you are just another Neo-Bolshevik living in the past and out of touch with the Armenian world, in short irrelevant, but for bouncing back and forth within your own bubble.

  3. Oh, God, is this all that our nation can produce as PM? As if some unseen hand purposefully appoints thugs and village bumpkins with narrow-minded, provincial mentality to the highest governmental posts… and by doing so, impedes progress.
