Open letter to readers and followers of Armenian Weekly:
Rightly and justifiably so, there is pent up frustration, anger and disappointment with respect to the stance of the US Government officials, including the President and Secretary of the State. There is vehement reaction everytime the US Government defends Turkey, supresses any report that brings to light the violations of human and religious rights by the Turkish government, and the most egregious of all the non recognition of the Genocide.
On few occassions I have posted a comment that this attitude and policy will not change as long a Turkey is a member of NATO.
Turkey joined NATO on 10/17/1951. It has been a member for 60 years.
On the socalled infamous 60th anniversary, if you visit the website of NATO (simply google NATO), you will find a number of articles/postings about Turkey’s membership in NATO and all the hogwash about the contributions and importance of Turkey to NATO.
On the site, there is also an interview with Turkey’s Defense Minister Yilmaz.
The interview might make you puke. However we cannot overlook the fact that this is the official website of NATO which has the full backing and censorship of the US government.
Turkey has become an important player in the ” AntiBallistic Missile Defense system” which has been the objective of the US military strategic plans.
Until we are able to unravel, unblock and comprehend all the “secret” agreements, deals and promises made by the US Government to bribe Turkey to have these antiballistic missiles ( in addition to the military bases and the missiles already stationed there) placed in Turkey, the sad reality is that the US will continue to consider Turkey an ” Ally”. The sad truth is that the US Government is scared to alienate Turkey, and Turkey blackmails and threatens the US with the closure of NATO military bases in Turkey.
This is the painful consqeuences of the world politics we live in.
Should we give up our fight? Absolutely not. We should continue to support the
ANCA with the work it does in the US. But we should also reorganize and reenergize the Diaspora, especially in the European countries , and make sure that Turkey is not admitted to the European Union. We have to pick our fights in areas where we have a chance to win the battle.
