Twenty five years ago, on December 7, 1988, a catastrophic earthquake ripped through Armenia, decimating the town of Spitak and surrounding areas. The quake left more than 25,000 people dead, 15,000 injured, 517,000 homeless, and $14.2 billion in economic damage.
This year, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the earthquake, a coalition of organizations came together under the auspices of Oxfam in Armenia to remember the victims

Excellent article. What have we learned from 12/7/88? New construction is a major part of Armenia’s economy today. Are the high-rise condominiums going up all over Central Yerevan and other cities being built to higher safety standards given the high probability of earthquakes in Armenia?
The Russian-Armenians are so corrupt and are only interested in self-advancement and profit with little regard to the betterment of the Russian-Armenian society . In an earthquake ridden country, technology such as base isolation should be used in all multi-story buildings. Base isolators are circular plates of steel sandwiched between circular rubber plates and this dampens the shaking of buildings thereby limiting building damage. Base isolation is the best technology to apply to all multi-story buildings and the technology works. Structural reinforcement of buildings will reduce the risk of building collapse but base isolated buildings will have little damage.
